Challenges
Twenty hours of footage across four cameras is a lot of material, and very little of it was scripted. The task was to find a story inside it. A competition show runs on a familiar structure, but BLANK needed to feel like BLANK: raw, artist-first and honest about how messy making art actually is. The episode also had a second audience. As a pilot, it had to prove the concept to funders and make the case for a full season. Every cut had to work for the room on premiere night and for the people deciding whether the show gets made.
Solution
The first step was a full pass on the footage to separate what was usable from what wasn’t. From there, we treated the competition like a narrative instead of a sequence of rounds. That meant mapping the eight personalities, how they bounced off each other, and how the winner and the eliminated artist could be traced through the episode from the start. Confessionals ran throughout to give viewers direct access to what each artist was thinking as the pressure built.
Within that structure, we pulled out themes that gave the episode depth. Some artists slowly lost or found their motivation over the course of the challenge. Others took charge of the room. Those arcs gave the format its stakes, and the humour that came naturally out of the group gave it rhythm.
The standard competition format stayed recognizable, but the grade, sound, graphics, titles and music were all shaped around BLANK’s brand and its focus on the raw process of creating. Throughout the month-long edit, we kept the funding audience in mind, building an episode that shows exactly what a full season of BLANK could be.
Results
The premiere at The Sandbox sold out. In the room, the audience laughed at the episode’s key comedic moments and gave it a round of applause at the end. BLANK was happy with the final cut, and the pilot is now the centrepiece of their push to fund post-production on the series. The episode hasn’t been released publicly yet, so this section can be updated with reach and viewer numbers once it is.
In Their Words
"Personally worked and still working with OddFolk through The Blank arts society for our exhibition/activation and every media material has been top quality and you can see the professionalism and how much thought they put into their work. As a detail oriented artist myself, I pick up on the little things!" - Segun Caezar, Co-Founder of BLANK Arts Society
